Cheap Car Insurance Tips: When an Accident Happens

In the event of an accident, it is important to adhere to the proper procedures so that there won't be any problems filing your insurance claims. Even if you have cheap car insurance, you will still want to make sure all of your bases are covered so that nothing stands in the way of your receiving all of the claims payments that are due to you. Here are a few tips to follow both before and after your accident that will hopefully make the process relatively smooth.

Study your policies beforehand. It is a good idea to know what the policy provisions are before the accident occurs so that there won't be any unpleasant surprises afterwards. Whether you have cheap car insurance or not, you will want to have an idea of how your insurance company wants you to proceed in the event of an accident.

Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle. This kit should contain a cellular phone, a pen and paper, a camera, emergency contact information, medical insurance information, first aid kit and emergency flares.

After the accident, do not panic. Panic and hysteria can only make things worse for all parties concerned. Try to keep calm.

Determine the extent of the damage. Keeping a camera in your car for the purpose of taking photographs of the damage and surroundings is an excellent idea.

Call the police. Regardless of what the other party says, call the police after the collision so that you can file a full report. Once the police arrive, discuss the accident only with the officer. Do not talk about the accident or admit any fault to the other party—it is not uncommon in the stress of the moment for a person to apologize, even if the accident was not their fault. This can be taken as liability, and can complicate the process. Additionally, do not speak of injuries; if the other person asks if you are alright, be non committal. Only speak of the details of the accident to the police and your insurance agent.

Try not to speak to the other parties in the accident. Many unscrupulous drivers will try to talk their way out of liability and convince you not to call the police or contact your insurance companies. Do not, under any circumstances, allow the other driver to cloud your judgment and prevent you from following the proper procedures.

Gather information. Get the names, contact information and the insurance information of everyone involved in the collision. Make sure you also get the make and model of the other vehicle, as well as the license plate number and the vehicle identification number. You will also want to speak to any witnesses.

Call your insurance agent. It is better to call your insurance company at the scene of the accident while the details are fresh in your mind. The police officer might be able to speak to the insurance representative and give more accurate information.

Clear your car of your belongings. Your car might sit in storage for quite a while, and you might not be able to access your things. If you are physically able, make sure you remove your valuables.
