Where You Live Determines if you Get Cheap Car Insurance

You are looking for the best auto insurance rates, but did you know that where you live can determine whether or not you are eligible for cheap car insurance? Learn how your state, zip code or community determines what premiums car insurance companies might charge you. The difference might even be thousands of dollars!

States with the lowest auto insurance rates. Yes, there are certain states that charge drivers lower rates. These are states that are determined to have low incidences of natural disasters such as fires, floods and tornadoes. Additionally, the lowest rate states also have lowest traffic congestion, as well as the lowest crime rates. Auto insurance customers in states such as Maine, Iowa and Wisconsin tend to have, on average, yearly premiums totaling less than $1000.

States with the highest auto insurance rates. These are states where a car owner is more likely to call in a claim for fire, flood or natural disaster damage as well as theft and vandalism. Because these states also have relatively high traffic density, reports of auto collisions are also more frequent. These states include Oklahoma, Louisiana, West Virginia and Michigan, where the annual insurance premiums average over $2000.

Zip codes can determine if you are eligible for cheap car insurance. Auto insurance rates vary depending upon what zip code the policy holder lives in. Highly populated, urban areas are seen as high risk by insurance companies and are therefore more expensive. Crime and heavy traffic are certainly significant factors, but also the number of car insurance claims that are filed within a certain zip code weigh in more heavily than almost any other criteria. If insurance companies notice that a large number of claims are filed from a neighborhood that is relatively safe, the insurance rates there will be higher than in a neighborhood that is crime-ridden but has residents that tend to use public transportation.

Rural areas versus urban areas for cheap car insurance. Highly populated metropolitan areas with apartment buildings rather than homes and parking structures rather than garages will likely have higher insurance rates. Cars that are parked in home garages tend to be safer from vandalism and theft than cars that are parked in large structures—even if those structures are guarded. Automobile thieves will target large parking garages for their high volume of vehicles. Also, the heavy and aggressive traffic leads to higher numbers of collisions in urban areas than in the relative calm of rural towns.

New neighborhoods in large cities are likely to have relatively low insurance rates, for the simple reasons that new neighborhoods are more likely to have home garages, and there were no residents there previously to file insurance claims. However, insurers very rarely ask vehicle owners if they have secure home garages unless they seek to insure a classic car.
